In the Mario and Luigi RPG series, Bowser is a fully playable protagonist with a realized inner life that's surprisingly sympathetic. In the 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie, his villain arc is explicitly driven by longing for connection — his methods are wrong, but his motivations are deeply recognizable.

In Super Smash Bros., Bowser consistently ranks among the most popular picks and is a fan favorite across the series. He's not just a foil. He's a complete character who happens to be on the wrong side of most conflicts.
